Life skills in maths with Multiply

At Multiply, our mission is to help adults who want to improve their life skills in maths. We offer fun, engaging courses throughout York and North Yorkshire to help you use maths in everyday situations. Delivered in small groups, our sessions won’t always have you sitting in a classroom. Instead, you’ll take on fun maths for adults, delivered in the format of cookery classes, arts and crafts, and more.

Why choose Multiply’s adult maths sessions?

Every day, people use maths without even noticing. But some of us have trouble – perhaps you have a condition like dyscalculia, or simply didn’t have the best time at school. The Multiply programme is here to take those stresses away, offering fun and engaging sessions for adults aged 19+. There’s no judgement here – just creative exercises to help you feel braver with numbers.

We’ve helped over 3,000 people improve their numeracy skills through workshops such as mocktail classes, candle making, gardening and much more. There are no scary exams or homework. We’ll have you covering addition, subtraction, fractions and more in everyday scenarios – for example, cutting up portion sizes.

With your new skills, you’ll feel happier taking on the tasks in life that worried you before. Calculate your bills, help the kids with their homework or even get the job you’ve always wanted. You can improve your maths life skills in as little as six weeks.

In the UK, 49% of all work-age people have the same numeracy skills as a primary school child.

The benefits of our practical maths sessions for adults

As we continue to navigate the cost of living crisis, basic maths skills are more important than ever. In 2022, independent charity National Numeracy revealed that 18% of the nation feels anxious about maths. Women and those on low incomes struggle even more so.

With our help, you can improve your confidence. Our courses are designed for those aged 19, offering tuition based on real scenarios that can happen at any point in your life. By improving your numeracy skills, you can:

  • Think on your feet when you need quick arithmetic, such as adding up restaurant tabs
  • Manage your money with better budgeting
  • Apply for jobs with confidence.

Our sessions can also put you on the path to adult maths GCSE/Functional Skills courses. Complete the Multiply sessions to progress, and keep up with your learning on our Century app.

How are sessions taught?

We teach sessions in small groups, focusing on a creative task such as cooking or crafts. We might even play competitive maths games like Taskmaster. At the end of each class, we’ll discuss the skills you’ve learnt, perhaps without even realising.

Are there maths courses for adults near me?

As these classes are funded by York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority, they take place in non-classroom venues around the county. This includes areas such as York, Harrogate, Scarborough, Richmondshire, Ryedale, Craven, Hambleton and Selby. You can find location details for each class on the course calendar.

How can I progress to a qualification?

After you’ve completed your Multiply Maths, you can apply for a six-week Progression Award. This sets the foundations for a GCSE maths course. We’ll log your progress and submit evidence to help you gain Entry Level 3, which will qualify you for GCSE level.

How do I sign up?

You can get in touch with us here to sign yourself up or your staff if you’re an employer. You can also download our Century app for access to adult online maths games, exercises and learning resources.
