That’s where the Multiply programme can help. Our North Yorkshire adult learning courses equip you with real skills for everyday life situations, without feeling like you’re in the classroom.
Free adult literacy, numeracy and digital skills courses
Our adult learning courses focus on the skills you use every day without even realising – from adding up restaurant bills to filling in online forms. Using real-life scenarios, we’ll help you improve your maths and English confidence in a judgement-free environment.
You can qualify for our free adult literacy and numeracy courses if you don’t have a grade C/4 or above in maths and English. Ideally, you’ll be over 19 years of age, but we also work with 14 to 25-year-olds thinking about employment, or 50 to 64-year-olds looking to enhance their digital knowledge.
Get back to life – not back to school!
No detentions here. Your classroom days are over, so we offer education and digital skills training in everyday scenarios. That means our lessons are fun. Think cooking, gardening, even murder mystery events… with basic maths and English thrown in.
Without realising, you’ll walk away with knowledge that will improve your life. Manage your money, find new employment opportunities and complete everyday digital tasks without fuss.
There’s no pressure to achieve a qualification and no scary exams. Just practical, accessible advice for those who missed out on key skills the first time around.
Course information
Muddled by maths, grimacing at grammar or all-round technophobe? We’ll improve your confidence with fun and practical life lessons across numeracy, literacy and digital.
English literacy
Know your adverbs from your adjectives – and everything in between. With bite-sized face-to-face courses and activities at local events, you’ll apply basic literacy skills to everyday scenarios. Build your confidence in job applications, writing emails and clear communication with these hands-on sessions.
Adult numeracy
Ever thought about how much you use maths in the kitchen, on the road or in the workplace? We’ll leave the algebra to the experts and focus on the skills that improve your life. From weighing up ingredients to totting up everyday expenses, maths is everywhere we go. We’re here to make it fun.
Digital skills
From getting directions to ordering coffee, there’s an app for just about everything. But it’s more than just your mobile. Our digital skills training will help you complete the tasks that used to be done with pen and paper, with fun and creative exercises to simulate everyday activities.

Access resources 24 hours a day with the Century app. Featuring content for everyday scenarios and job roles, it covers everything from mental maths games for adults to GCSE-level English functional skills. Plus, if you’re brushing up on your digital know-how, it’s a great place to start.

The Progression Award
These six-week English and maths courses are ideal if you’ve been out of education for a while. Working in focused groups of just six learners, the Progression Award builds the foundation for GCSE-level courses. At the end of the sessions, we’ll submit evidence of your learning to help you gain Entry Level 3.
You can get started on this course after you’ve completed our practical sessions with local delivery partners.
Open Events
Our delivery partners also offer Progression Award support and events in your local area. Look out for fun, engaging sessions at events like family festivals, race days and fun runs. Free digital, maths and English resources
Multiply is locally funded by the City of York Council, North Yorkshire Council and York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority. That means we work with specialised delivery partners and volunteers who understand your needs. Every session is in a relaxed local environment rather than a classroom. Make your way through everyday work and life challenges without textbooks. Whether you’re just getting to grips with digital or struggle with dyscalculia and dyslexia, we’re here to help. Everybody is treated equally and our creative lessons can be applied to business, healthcare, admin and much more.
